An undercover sting in League City last Thursday escalated quickly from a traffic stop to what authorities describe as a massive pharmaceutical takedown, with investigators seizing more than 120 kilograms of suspected prescription pills and other controlled substances. The operation started with a stop tied to a package pickup and continued with a follow-up search at an apartment in the Houston area, officials said. Two men were arrested, and investigators say the probe is still active as they work to track where the shipment came from and where it was headed.

What investigators recovered

Investigators say the haul was a bulky mix of pills and powders, heavily weighted toward tapentadol and carisoprodol. Authorities reported roughly 34.9 kilograms of tapentadol, about 59 kilograms of carisoprodol, 11.6 kilograms of sildenafil, 7.4 kilograms of modafinil, 4.5 kilograms of zolpidem and 3.6 kilograms of pregabalin. They also intercepted a 15.2-kilogram package of tapentadol tablets delivered to a gas station in League City. Those totals were reported by CW39 Houston.

Why the haul matters

Authorities emphasize that the mix of substances spans several federal schedules and could be pushed into illicit markets instead of being used under medical supervision. Tapentadol is classified as a Schedule II opioid by the DEA, according to PubChem. Carisoprodol, often known by the brand name Soma, is listed as a Schedule IV controlled substance by the DEA. Pregabalin falls under Schedule V in federal rulemaking documented in the Federal Register. Other drugs seized, including zolpidem and modafinil, are also controlled, underscoring the public health concerns highlighted in federal drug resources.

How the sting unfolded and the charges

According to investigators, the undercover operation came to a head near a Shell station on FM 518 in League City, where a suspect arrived to pick up a package. Once the pickup happened, officers conducted a traffic stop. That stop led agents to search an apartment on or near Bay Area Boulevard at Receda Drive in southeast Houston, where they say they uncovered additional narcotics.

The organized crime task force behind the operation included Homeland Security Investigations and the League City Police Department. Two men were arrested and charged with two counts of delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 of 400 grams or more. Investigators told CW39 Houston that the case is still active and that more charges could follow.

Officials have not released the suspects' names or laid out a detailed timeline for potential court filings while the investigation continues. They say further updates are expected as they follow leads and try to map out both the source of the shipment and the wider distribution network behind it.
