New Yorkers braved soggy skies on Monday to pause aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86 for a solemn Memorial Day observance honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. On the flight deck, a wreath-laying, the playing of Taps and a rifle salute brought veterans and city leaders to quiet attention. Later in the day, the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade in Queens was set to roll out at 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Ceremony Aboard the Intrepid
The museum’s annual Memorial Day program began at 10 a.m. in Hangar 3, drawing veterans, active service members and civic officials for brief remarks and a ceremonial wreath-laying. The program was scheduled to wrap up with a Navy flyover and was free to attend, with those details posted on the event page, according to the Intrepid Museum.
Mayor, City Officials Pay Tribute
City Council Speaker Julie Menin joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani and military leaders on the pier, where Mamdani closed out the program with remarks, according to WABC. The outlet also noted that the ceremony featured a three-volley rifle salute and the playing of Taps. Mamdani, who was sworn in as mayor on January 1, 2026, has been coordinating city agencies ahead of the holiday, per the Mayor’s Office.
Queens Parade Marches On
In eastern Queens, the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade, long billed by organizers as the nation’s largest Memorial Day march, was scheduled to step off at 2 p.m. from Jayson Avenue and Northern Boulevard. The route was set to move west along Northern Boulevard to 245th Street. Organizers say the parade has marched “rain or shine” for decades, according to the official site lndmemorialday.com.
Weather and Practical Notes
Even as Queens planned to press ahead, several suburban and Long Island parades were canceled because of rain and safety concerns, as reported by News 12. For those unable to attend in person, the Intrepid said it would stream Monday’s ceremony on Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, according to the Intrepid Museum. Would-be attendees were urged to check official event pages for any last-minute updates before heading out.
