A Pennsylvania man wanted on federal child-pornography charges was arrested in Naples, Florida, after U.S. Marshals tracked him to a makeshift hut in the woods behind a local home, ending a months-long search that began after he slipped away from investigators in his home state. Authorities said U.S. Marshals took 46-year-old Joseph Mazzoni into custody on Wednesday. According to FOX 29 Philadelphia, marshals executed a search warrant at a Naples residence and found Mazzoni hiding in a crude shelter behind the property. Officials also released photos of the rough hut where he had allegedly been staying.
How investigators tracked him
Investigators flagged Mazzoni after a March search of his Pennsylvania home allegedly turned up “file upon file” of child sexual abuse material, including images involving toddlers, according to a bulletin posted by Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers. The bulletin said he faced roughly 28 counts tied to possession and dissemination, and that marshals believed he had relocated to Southwest Florida to avoid arrest.
Prior convictions and local ties
Mazzoni, whom investigators tie to Delaware County, previously pleaded guilty to possession-of-child-pornography charges in 2013 and 2015, according to Gulf Coast News Now. Local reports also note additional encounters with law enforcement, including drug offenses and failures to register as a sex offender.
Marshals' statement
Eric Gartner, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said the agency “has zero tolerance for sexual predators preying on children” and warned that “going entirely off of the grid in a different state offers no respite from the relentless pursuit of justice,” FOX 29 reported. Officials said the arrest came through coordinated work by fugitive task forces operating across state lines.
Legal note
Federal law prohibits possession, distribution and dissemination of child pornography, and such cases are commonly prosecuted in federal court, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Penalties for federal sexual-exploitation offenses can include lengthy prison terms and other statutory consequences.
Anyone with information about Mazzoni's movements before his capture was asked to contact Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS or use the P3 Tips app, the agency's bulletin said. Tips can be submitted anonymously and may be eligible for a cash reward.
