A small brush fire along the Guadalupe River in south San Jose ended with a big development last night, when police say they arrested a woman suspected of being behind a recent arson spree in the area.
San José police were called around 8:30 p.m. to assist firefighters after a reported arson along the river. Fire crews quickly doused the blaze, and investigators detained a woman who officers say matched the description of a person spotted near several earlier fires reported this week. The adult female suspect was booked into the county jail, and the investigation is still active.

Arrest and Ongoing Probe
In the same post, police said an adult female suspect responsible for the arson spree was taken into custody and booked into the county jail after officers saw someone who matched the description of a person reportedly seen near three prior arson fires in the last 48 to 72 hours. Detectives are continuing to work with the SJFD arson investigator to determine whether those recent fires are all connected, and officials say the investigation remains active.
Why the Guadalupe River Corridor Is a Hot Spot
The Guadalupe River corridor cuts through residential neighborhoods and often includes encampments and dense vegetation that can help small fires spread, making it a recurring focus for patrols and cleanup work. Local coverage notes that Valley Water contracts with SJPD to enforce stream stewardship along waterways in the area, per the San José Spotlight.
City budget documents also show recent funding to bolster arson-unit staffing and patrols along trails and waterways, including the Guadalupe River corridor, according to the City of San José.
What Happens Next in the Legal Process
Police have not publicly released the suspect’s name or any list of formal charges. Any criminal charges would be filed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office once detectives wrap up their reports and present the case. For now, investigators say they are still working to confirm whether the recent fires are linked as part of the same series.
