What was supposed to be a late-night graduation celebration at a short-term rental in southwest Atlanta turned chaotic Wednesday when gunfire erupted after a fight inside the house, according to police. Investigators say at least one person who had left the property came back and fired into the home on the 800 block of Smith Street. No one was hit, and as of Thursday morning officers had not announced any arrests.
Scene And Police Response
Atlanta officers were called out after neighbors reported hearing shots and arrived to find evidence that gunfire had taken place at the rental, Atlanta News First reports. Investigators say it started with an altercation inside the home before someone left, returned and opened fire into the residence. Detectives spent the night canvassing the area, looking for witnesses and any surveillance cameras that might have caught the incident.
A Pattern Of Post-Graduation Violence
This is not the first time a graduation season celebration in Atlanta has turned violent. In May 2023, a 16-year-old was killed after gunfire broke out outside an unauthorized post-graduation gathering near Benjamin E. Mays High School, a case that sparked a major community response and renewed concern over late-night parties spilling into public areas, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta.
Atlanta police are asking anyone who knows anything about Wednesday night's shooting to come forward. Tips can be shared anonymously with Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta at stopcrimeatl.org or by calling 404-577-8477. The investigation is still active.
