A late-night collision near Mather left two people on e-motorcycles dead and put a pickup truck driver under arrest, according to authorities. The crash happened Monday around 9:17 p.m. at the intersection of Eagles Nest Road and Woodring Drive, drawing crews from Sacramento Metro Fire and the California Highway Patrol. Two occupants of the pickup were also injured and taken to local hospitals, and investigators kept the scene shut down for hours.
According to ABC10, CHP East Sacramento said officers arrested the pickup's driver after the crash, which killed two people riding e-motorcycles. The outlet reports a passenger who was initially detained at the scene was later arrested, and that two people from the pickup were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Scene and emergency response
Sacramento Metro Fire said crews located four people at the scene and transported two of them to area hospitals, one with major injuries and another with moderate injuries. KCRA reported the crash happened just south of Mather Golf Course and that CHP closed the roadway while investigators worked into the night.
Witnesses and preliminary account
Witnesses told ABC10 the pickup, described by witnesses as a Nissan, ran the intersection at a high rate of speed before the collision, and CHP said two people on e-motorcycles were struck. CHP spokesperson Angie Monroe is quoted in that report urging drivers to obey the rules of the road: "Please just drive and obey the rules of the road," as investigators continued processing the scene.
Where policy and safety collide
The crash comes as Sacramento and state policymakers are debating how to handle high-powered "e-motos" that can be sold as e-bikes but operate at much higher speeds. Local coverage and analysis on speed-demon e-motos flooding school bike racks and reporting from Streetsblog California note recent bills and consumer alerts aimed at tightening definitions so truly motorized machines are treated differently than low-speed e-bikes.
Investigation ongoing
CHP said the crash remains under investigation and has not immediately released names or detailed charges, and prosecutors will review the case as the probe continues. CBS Sacramento reported investigators were still processing the scene and that officials planned to update the public as more information becomes available.
