A late-afternoon crash between two pickup trucks in northeast Houston left one man dead, another in the hospital, and Homestead Road choked with traffic on Wednesday, according to city police.
The wreck unfolded around 5:20 p.m. in the 9700 block of Homestead Road. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver of a white Dodge Ram dead at the scene, while the driver of a black GMC Sierra was rushed to a nearby hospital.
What Houston police said
According to a Houston Police Department news release posted on the City of Houston, a white Dodge Ram was heading north on Homestead when it "failed to maintain a single lane." Investigators say the truck lost control, hit the center median divider, rolled over, and then crashed into a southbound black GMC Sierra.
The male driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene. The GMC driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment. HPD listed the case under incident number 067982226-A and said the deceased man's identity is being withheld until the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences can notify his family.
Homestead Road's recent trouble
The 9700 block sits along a stretch of Homestead Road that has seen its share of serious crashes and violent incidents in recent years. Local coverage has documented prior shootings and road-rage flare-ups in the area, including a 2024 incident that briefly put Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital on lockdown, as reported by ABC13.
Investigation ongoing
HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division says the investigation into Wednesday's fatal crash is ongoing and that more information will be released as it becomes available. The collision was also covered by MyTexasDaily, which published the department's release.
