A deadly single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 57 turned a routine Monday evening drive into a fatal scene near Wetaug in Pulaski County, according to the Illinois State Police. Troopers with Troop 10 arrived to find a vehicle overturned near milepost 21.5 on the southbound side of the interstate, where the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle, and the crash remains under investigation.
As reported by WSIL, the crash happened at approximately 7:15 p.m. on May 18 and blocked the southbound lanes near milepost 21.5. Illinois State Police said Troop 10 personnel responded to the scene, confirmed the driver was the sole occupant, and pronounced the motorist deceased on-site.
Investigation and Crash Trends
Illinois State Police investigators are still working to determine what led to the rollover, and officials have not yet released the driver’s identity. State crash data show that overturned vehicles account for dozens of fatal crashes each year in Illinois, and that interstate highways carry a disproportionate share of the most severe wrecks, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Enforcement Along the I-57 Corridor
The Illinois State Police has stepped up enforcement on I-57 in recent years, concentrating on speeding violations and Move Over law compliance as part of broader statewide traffic safety operations, the agency noted in a press release. Those efforts have resulted in hundreds of speeding citations and motor-carrier inspections, underscoring the ongoing safety concerns on the busy interstate.
No further details about Monday’s crash have been released, and the Illinois State Police say the incident remains under investigation. WSIL reported that Troop 10 personnel responded to the scene and confirmed the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
