The Friday morning commute on Interstate 95 turned ugly near Canton when a three-vehicle crash at Exit 25 left the northbound side smeared with spilled fertilizer and sent two people to the hospital, officials said. State police said the wreck, which involved two commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle, happened just before 6:30 a.m. and forced emergency crews to shut down most travel lanes while they dealt with a wide debris field. Rush-hour drivers were stuck in heavy delays as traffic crawled past the scene.
Massachusetts State Police said both people in the passenger vehicle were taken to Boston Medical Center and that the cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to Boston 25 News. Officials said one of the commercial trucks was hauling fertilizer and spilled its load in the collision, leaving crews to deal with a large debris field across the highway.
MassDOT posted on X that three right lanes were shut down near Exit 25 and urged drivers to steer clear of the area while crews worked the scene. The morning got even tougher for Route 128 commuters thanks to an earlier truck crash in Westwood that caused a fuel spill a few exits south and helped create long backups, NBC Boston reported.
Cleanup and commute delays
Crews spent much of the morning sweeping up fertilizer, removing wreckage and hauling away damaged vehicle parts while traffic was funneled into the left lane, officials said. MassDOT warned that lane closures could stretch on for several hours as workers cleared the sprawling debris field and checked the roadway for damage. Lanes in Westwood tied to the earlier fuel spill were reopened around 8 a.m. after that cleanup finished, according to Boston 25 News.
Investigation
State police said detectives stayed on scene to process evidence and reconstruct the crash, and officials have not yet released any conclusion about what triggered the collision. Local authorities said they plan to share more information once it is available. The incident was first flagged in MassDOT traffic alerts and has been tracked by regional outlets including The Boston Globe.
What drivers should know
Anyone heading through the Route 128 corridor should brace for lingering backups and think about alternate routes until crews fully clear the Canton crash scene. Commuters are urged to check MassDOT alerts and local traffic reports for current lane closures and to budget extra travel time if their drive runs near Canton or Westwood; NBC Boston is providing continuing updates.
