Federal agents from the FBI's Dallas field office teamed up with counterparts from the FBI's Newark office to arrest fugitive Ricky Vargas in Longview, Texas, on Thursday, bringing an interstate manhunt to a close. Vargas had been wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing outside JoJo’s Bar & Grill in Garfield, New Jersey, in February 2024.
According to a Facebook post from FBI Dallas, agents located Vargas in Longview and took him into custody on Thursday. The post notes that FBI Dallas assisted the FBI Newark field office in the operation, identifies Vargas by name, and outlines the charges he was facing. That social media update served as the first public confirmation of the arrest.
What Vargas Is Charged With
According to the FBI, Vargas faces New Jersey state charges that include first-degree murder, causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crime, and weapons offenses, as well as a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution tied to those state counts. The FBI wanted poster offers up to $15,000 for information leading to his arrest and lists aliases and locations where he may have ties. A federal arrest warrant was issued in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
New Jersey Case and Investigation
Local reporting describes a pre-dawn confrontation outside JoJo’s Bar & Grill on Feb. 4, 2024, in which 31-year-old Richard Franceschi was stabbed and later died, according to Daily Voice. Bergen County prosecutors said surveillance video, cellphone data, and other evidence placed Vargas and four companions at the scene. Four co-defendants were arrested earlier, while Vargas remained at large. Prosecutors and local law enforcement then worked with federal partners as the search expanded to other states.
What Happens Next
The FBI Dallas Facebook post did not spell out how or when Vargas will be transferred, and officials did not immediately say where he would be held. The federal wanted poster and local charging documents indicate that Bergen County prosecutors, together with federal authorities in the District of New Jersey, are expected to oversee prosecution, according to the FBI and local reporting. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to contact the FBI tip line or the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
