A late-afternoon fight in Northwest Portland left a man seriously hurt and a 37-year-old woman in handcuffs Wednesday, according to police.
Officers were called just before 4:30 p.m. on May 13 to the 500 block of Northwest 6th Avenue, where they found a man who had been cut with a sharp object. Police said the man declined to be taken by ambulance, despite the seriousness of his injuries.
Investigators later identified a suspect as Ginger Elizabeth Harris, 37. Officers ultimately arrested her and recovered two knives, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
KPTV reports that officers located Harris around 7:30 p.m. near Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Irving Street, where they arrested her and seized two knives at the scene. She was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault. The station noted there was no immediate update on the victim’s condition and no word yet on whether prosecutors had filed any additional charges beyond the initial booking.
Legal note
Second-degree assault in Oregon is classified as a Class B felony. Under Oregon Public Law, the statute can cover intentionally or knowingly causing serious physical injury, or causing injury with a deadly or dangerous weapon. The law distinguishes between different mental states and whether a deadly or dangerous weapon was involved, and it carries felony-level penalties if prosecutors move forward with a case.
What's next
The Portland Police Bureau says the investigation is ongoing, and Harris remains in custody following her booking into jail. Anyone who may have seen what happened or has additional information is asked to contact the Portland Police non-emergency line at 503-823-3333 or submit details using the bureau’s online reporting system, per Portland Police guidance.
Authorities have not released any further updates on the case. This story will be updated if the Portland Police Bureau or Multnomah County officials provide additional information.
