Two people were shot Sunday evening in Superior after police responded to a 911 report of a person armed with a knife, Superior Police Chief Paul Winterscheidt said at a Tuesday news conference. Both were taken to local hospitals and are expected to survive as state investigators step in to review what happened.

Around 6:30 p.m., two officers were sent to a home in the Central Park neighborhood after a caller reported someone with a knife, according to Northern News Now. At some point during that response, gunfire was exchanged and two people were hit. Winterscheidt told reporters both shooting victims are expected to pull through, as FOX 9 reported.

What investigators say

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is now leading the case. The officer who fired was wearing a body camera and is on administrative leave while the probe plays out, according to the Star Tribune. Investigators have not released the body camera footage or the identities of those who were wounded. When DCI finishes its work, the agency will hand its findings to the Douglas County district attorney for review.

A city still reeling

The shooting is the latest in a run of officer-involved incidents in the Twin Ports area this year. On April 7, a separate encounter in the 1700 block of Oakes Avenue left a man dead and remains under DCI review, according to a Wisconsin DOJ news release. In that case, police released only limited information but confirmed a firearm was recovered at the scene as the department publicly pushed back on misinformation, WDIO reported.

What to expect next

For now, state investigators are still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Once the Division of Criminal Investigation completes its report, the Douglas County district attorney will decide whether any criminal charges are warranted.
