A newsroom-themed coffee shop called Daily Press Cafe is moving into the former Kung Fu Tea space at 22001 Michigan Avenue in downtown West Dearborn, with the owners targeting an Aug. 1 opening. The compact corner spot plans to pour coffees and teas, blend smoothies and stack deli sandwiches, all inside a space that leans hard into a newsroom aesthetic. Fit-out and construction are just getting underway at Michigan and Monroe as the team prepares to swap bubble tea for a neighborhood cafe.
The plans were first reported by What Now, which quoted owner Mohamad Alshormany, who said the group hopes to open on Aug. 1 and will publish a full menu closer to launch. According to that coverage, the new spot will occupy Suite 150 and highlight seasonal drinks alongside classic cafe fare. The announcement is landing early in the construction timeline, so details remain subject to change.
“More than just a cafe,” the business wrote on Instagram, a line noted in the initial coverage by What Now. The owners say vintage televisions and other newsroom touches will help sell the concept, and they describe the space as intended for community gatherings rather than only grab-and-go service. Early posts promise “a place to gather, unwind, and feel at home,” language the team has echoed in its social updates.
What It Replaces
The Daily Press Cafe will take over the corner unit long occupied by Kung Fu Tea. The West Dearborn Downtown Development Authority's meeting minutes show Kung Fu Tea received a $10,000 Open Door Grant in 2024 for outdoor seating and interior floor work, underscoring the chain's recent investment in the site, City of Dearborn. Mapping listings also show the bubble-tea shop at the same suite number on Michigan Avenue, Apple Maps.
Where It Sits In West Dearborn
The new cafe joins a cluster of eateries along the Michigan Avenue strip, standing across from Mint 29 and close to Qahwah House and Paradise Street Eats & Biryani. Mint 29 has long anchored the downtown dining strip, Dearborn Blog, while Qahwah House and Paradise Street Eats list Michigan Avenue locations that put them steps from the new shop, Paradise Street Eats. The nearby Henry Ford museum complex also helps bring steady visitor traffic to the neighborhood, The Henry Ford.
