Gordon Park is officially a construction zone, at least on the south side. Cleveland Metroparks has moved crews into the southern half of the lakefront park and kicked off the first phase of a multi-million-dollar overhaul, closing that portion of the park to the public for the next few years. The south side is expected to stay off limits through spring 2027, with a target reopening in summer 2027. This opening package is all about reconnecting the lakefront to nearby neighborhoods with new green space, play areas and better access.
According to Cleveland Metroparks, construction of Phase 1 is now underway and includes closure of the pedestrian bridge over I-90 that links the south and north sections of the park. The agency notes the park will remain closed through spring 2027 and aims to reopen the improved space in summer 2027. Officials say this first construction package focuses on safety, access and new amenities across the park's southern acreage.
Work Planned In The South Park
Phase 1 is set to deliver a new Great Lawn and promenade, a modern play space, flush restrooms, a picnic pavilion with grilling areas, upgraded lighting and refreshed park entry and parking lots, WOIO/Cleveland19 reports. Most of the action is concentrated on the 48-acre southern section between East 72nd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive - the area that Cleveland Metroparks took over in recent years. At neighborhood meetings, residents have said they want safer paths, real gathering spots and family-friendly programming, and planners say this phase is designed with those requests in mind.
Funding And Timeline
The first phase is backed by an $8 million grant from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, according to Cleveland Metroparks, with additional costs covered by Metroparks capital dollars. Local coverage has pegged the opening construction package as roughly a $10 million investment for Phase 1, as noted by WKYC. Contracting and design partners cited in Metroparks materials include Next Generation Construction and consultants MKSK, Osborn Engineering and Bialosky.
Community Planning And Access
This overhaul grows out of a neighborhood-focused planning effort led by LAND studio and SmithGroup that wrapped in December 2024, with residents weighing in at public meetings along the way, News 5 Cleveland reported. Planners say Phase 1 reflects those priorities by emphasizing shared lawn space, play areas and improved entry points that better tie the St. Clair–Superior neighborhood to the lakefront. Metroparks staff have described this work as the first move in a multi-phase push to reactivate the east-side lakefront.
What Residents Can Expect
For now, neighbors can expect temporary closures and shifting parking and trail access while heavy construction is underway. On the other side of the inconvenience, the plan promises new everyday amenities meant for families, community events and casual neighborhood hangouts. Coverage of the Mandel Foundation's wide-ranging support for multiple east-side lakefront projects has placed Gordon Park inside a broader push to speed up long-deferred lakefront improvements and trail connections, Cleveland Scene noted. Officials say construction updates and timing will be posted on Metroparks planning pages as the work moves forward.
