Five people, including an Uber driver, were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a three-car crash flipped a vehicle on Interstate 480 West in Cleveland, according to fire officials. The collision happened at the State Route 94, or Pearl Road, interchange and shut down lanes for over an hour before the highway fully cleared around 7:45 p.m.
EMS crews transported the five people to the hospital with conditions that remain unknown, according to FOX 8 News, which first reported the crash. The group included a man, a woman, and a family of three, and the Cleveland Division of Fire confirmed that one of the drivers was working for Uber at the time. The station reported that the Uber vehicle's passengers did not need medical attention. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene, and the crash investigation remains ongoing, per the same outlet.
A Corridor Already Under the Microscope
The crash lands squarely inside a stretch of highway that state officials had just flagged as dangerous. Weeks earlier, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Department of Transportation designated the 14-mile stretch of I-480 running from the Lorain County line to State Route 176 as Cuyahoga County's new Speed and Seat Belt Safety Corridor, according to the agencies' announcement, deploying additional troopers and digital signage to curb accidents. That same stretch had recorded roughly 800 crashes and nine fatalities over the preceding two years, per state highway patrol statistics.
The chronic crash numbers on this corridor aren't isolated to Cuyahoga County's stretch of I-480. Cleveland.com reported that Cuyahoga County led all Ohio counties in total speed-related crashes from 2022 through 2025, a trend that helped push state transportation officials to concentrate enforcement here. Interstate 480 also ranks among the region's busiest routes, carrying between 100,000 and 120,000 vehicles a day, according to Ohio Department of Transportation traffic data.
What Ohio Law Says About Rideshare Coverage
Because one of the drivers involved was working for Uber, the crash also touches on rideshare insurance rules that don't apply to ordinary motorists. Under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3942, transportation network companies like Uber must carry $1 million in primary third-party liability coverage whenever a driver is actively transporting a passenger or en route to pick one up. It remains unclear from available reporting whether that coverage threshold will factor into this particular crash's investigation.
A Pattern of Serious Crashes on the Same Highway
Tuesday's wreck is the latest in a string of severe crashes along I-480 in recent weeks. Just five days earlier, on August 20, a separate three-vehicle crash on the I-71 South ramp to I-480 West near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport sent seven people to the hospital and created a six-mile traffic backup, WKYC reported. Two days after that, an armed robbery suspect fleeing Solon police at speeds exceeding 115 mph crashed into two vehicles on I-480 near Northfield Road, injuring a 40-year-old female driver.
Earlier this year, a motorcycle collision on I-480 West near the Ridge Road exit in May resulted in one fatality and prompted a multi-agency closure of the highway. The Ohio Department of Transportation has also budgeted $10.97 million for a project starting this year to replace the I-71 northbound to I-480 westbound ramp bridge in Cleveland, including roadway reconstruction and shoulder widening, though that work targets a different interchange than Tuesday's crash site.
Open questions remain about what triggered the multi-car collision at the Pearl Road interchange, including whether speeding, an improper lane change, or a mechanical failure played a role. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has not yet said whether any citations or charges will follow once its investigation concludes.
