A deadly crash shut down a busy stretch of southbound Lamb Boulevard at Tonopah on Friday night after a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the roadway, turning the evening commute into a traffic nightmare. Emergency crews responded and pronounced the person dead at the scene while investigators worked the intersection and collected evidence. Drivers were told to steer clear and find alternate routes while officials managed the scene.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the collision happened just before 8:30 p.m., when a vehicle hit a person who was already in the roadway. Medical personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, and the Regional Transportation Commission reported that all southbound lanes of Lamb at Tonopah were blocked while first responders and investigators cleared the area, according to KSNV. Police advised motorists to avoid the corridor and use detours until the road fully reopened.
Lamb Boulevard's safety record
Lamb Boulevard has long been flagged as a high-risk route for people on foot. The Nevada Department of Transportation’s Lamb Boulevard Safety Management Plan examined crashes from 2011 through 2016 and documented 25 pedestrian collisions. The plan calls for changes such as raised medians, wider sidewalks and upgraded crossings aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and improving drivers' sight lines. Those short-term fixes are still part of ongoing local planning efforts to cut down on pedestrian crashes, according to NDOT.
Local concerns and past incidents
Residents and crossing guards have repeatedly complained about narrow sidewalks and fast traffic along this stretch. Hoodline has previously highlighted a hit-and-run at Lamb and Tonopah last November that left a crossing guard injured. Advocates say it will take both engineering upgrades and tougher enforcement to keep more people from being killed or hurt, a concern that has shown up in recent local reporting and county safety plans.
What investigators say
Metro has not yet released the victim's name or details about the vehicle involved, and the investigation remains active. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage is urged to contact the department's traffic investigators, according to KSNV. Officials did not immediately provide information on when the road fully reopened, and public safety agencies are expected to share additional updates as the investigation moves forward.
