A late-night fire damaged the Black Sheep Pub, the three-story Irish tavern at 17th and Latimer in Center City, leaving staff and patrons rattled but uninjured. Flames broke out on the pub's second floor, and firefighters zeroed in on the second and third floors as they worked to get the situation under control. No injuries have been reported.
Owner James Stephens told NBC10 Philadelphia that the full scope of the damage will be evaluated over the next day or two, and that he is aiming to reopen in time for the World Cup. "Listen, nobody was hurt, everything can be rebuilt," Stephens said. A crew from NBC10 Philadelphia reported from the scene that firefighters concentrated their efforts on the upper floors of the Rittenhouse-area building.
Rittenhouse Mainstay
The Black Sheep has been a Rittenhouse Square fixture since it opened around 2000, as noted by The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the pub lists its address as 247 S. 17th St. Its three-story colonial townhouse setup, which has made the spot feel cozy for decades, now means a careful damage assessment is especially important for the upstairs dining rooms and neighboring units. Regulars and nearby businesses are likely to keep a close eye on repair plans as Stephens weighs his options.
What’s Next
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. Stephens said he expects an inspection and formal estimate in the coming days. City inspectors and the owner will determine whether the upper floors can be repaired or will need more extensive work before the pub can reopen. For now, neighbors have been told to expect more activity on the block from emergency crews and contractors as the property is secured and evaluated.
