A late-night walk near George Bush Intercontinental Airport turned deadly early Sunday when a woman was hit and killed on Will Clayton Parkway, according to Houston police. The collision, reported around 1:30 a.m., is being treated as a hit-and-run after witnesses said one driver took off while another came back and waited for officers.
As reported by KHOU, the woman has not yet been identified and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told investigators a Jeep ran over the victim, then circled back and stayed until police arrived, according to the outlet.
In a statement to KHOU, police said the Jeep driver showed no signs of intoxication. Detectives are now focused on tracking down the driver of the first vehicle, who allegedly hit the woman and kept going. The investigation is still active, and officers are canvassing the roads and nearby airport parking lots for surveillance video and more witnesses.
Police ask for tips
Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen the crash, or who has dashcam or security footage from the area around the time of the incident, to contact authorities. Witnesses are asked to reach out to the Houston Police Department's Hit-and-Run Unit or call Crime Stoppers, according to the Houston Police Department.
A pattern of hit-and-runs
The deadly crash adds to a string of recent hit-and-run cases in Houston that have left residents frustrated and on edge. A recent report on the Westheimer hit-and-run horror tied another death this month to the same troubling trend and urged anyone with information or footage to step forward.
In this latest case near Bush Airport, the driver of the first vehicle remains at large. Detectives say they are continuing to follow leads and again ask anyone with information to come forward. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
