A woman was struck and killed late Sunday night in west Houston, and the driver who hit her kept going, police say. The deadly collision near Eldridge Parkway and Westheimer Road has turned a busy commercial corridor into the latest hit-and-run crime scene.
Houston police say the crash was reported around 9:18 p.m. Sunday. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and officers say the driver never stopped. Investigators have not released any description of the vehicle or the person behind the wheel. The scene stayed active well into the night as officers worked to collect evidence and track down witnesses, according to KHOU.
Westheimer's deadly stretch
Westheimer Road has long had a dangerous reputation for people on foot, and national reporting has backed up what locals have felt for years. A Washington Post analysis found that 36 people were killed between 2010 and 2023 on just a 3.5-mile span of Westheimer. Traffic-safety advocates say wide, multi-lane roads like this make nighttime crossings especially risky.
How to help investigators
Detectives are urging anyone who might have seen the crash or captured it on camera to come forward. According to the Houston Police Department, tips and video can be sent to the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4065 or to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
This latest death follows another deadly hit-and-run in the city late last month, part of a troubling run of pedestrian and hit-and-run cases across Houston. No arrests have been announced in this incident, and detectives are still canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance footage and leads, according to coverage of another deadly hit-and-run.
