A late-night hit-and-run in Chandler left a pedestrian dead on Wednesday, according to police. The crash happened just before 10 p.m. near Chandler Boulevard and Metro Boulevard, where first responders found a person lying in the roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not yet identified the pedestrian and are still looking for the driver, as reported by Arizona's Family. The outlet notes that details remain limited and authorities have not released any description of the vehicle or the suspect.
What the data shows
The case fits into a troubling statewide pattern. The Arizona Department of Transportation recorded 263 pedestrian deaths in 2024, and roughly three-quarters of those fatalities happened in dark conditions, with Maricopa and Pima counties accounting for most of the deaths, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. That pattern, with fatalities concentrated on multi-lane arterials at night, has fueled calls for better lighting, safer crosswalks and stronger enforcement across the Valley.
