A routine Friday at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield was abruptly interrupted when administrators found a loaded handgun inside a student’s backpack, according to the Parkway School District. Staff confiscated the weapon without incident, and officials say there were no specific threats made against students. Families were notified by letter, and staff used the moment to remind students to report any safety concerns to a trusted adult.
In a message to families, the district said school administrators secured the weapon and immediately contacted law enforcement. “Bringing a weapon to campus violates the Safe Schools Act and is a serious violation of our discipline policy carrying the highest level of consequences,” the district wrote, as reported by First Alert 4. The student involved was not identified, and the district did not say whether any criminal charges would follow.
Parkway West Middle is part of the Parkway School District, which serves large portions of St. Louis County. The school’s website highlights family resources and a district “Safety Tip Line” for reporting concerns, according to West Middle School.
Not the first time at Parkway
This is not the first weapons-related scare connected to a Parkway campus. In October 2025, a student at Parkway West High was found with a loaded gun, and Chesterfield police were called in that case as well, according to First Alert 4. That earlier incident, like Friday’s, was handled jointly by school administrators and local law enforcement, and no injuries were reported.
What Missouri law requires
Missouri’s Safe Schools Act outlines mandatory reporting and discipline when a weapon turns up on campus, including a default suspension of at least one year or expulsion for any student found to have brought a weapon to school. Superintendents can modify that punishment in individual cases, according to Missouri Revised Statutes. Parkway’s own board policy further spells out how the district handles weapons incidents, including discipline and required reports to authorities, as detailed in BoardDocs.
The district says it will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation and reiterated that student safety remains its top priority. Families with questions were directed to contact their child’s school directly or use the district’s online reporting tools, according to Parkway Schools.
