One of Magic Kingdom’s most nostalgia-soaked refuges from the Florida heat is about to take its final bow in its current form. Carousel of Progress will give its last performance as-is on July 4, then go dark beginning July 6 for what Disney is calling the show’s most ambitious overhaul in more than 30 years. The rotating theater is expected to stay closed through much of next year while Imagineers gut, tweak, and polish the classic attraction before its refreshed version returns.
What’s changing
This is not a quick coat of paint. The refurbishment will reimagine all four acts, locking each one into a specific era: the family tuning in to the Apollo moon landing in the summer of 1969, a neon-tinged Halloween night in 1985, the early days of the internet around the turn of the millennium, and a far-future finale inspired by Imagineer John Hench. The project is being billed as the fourth major update since the attraction debuted at the 1964 World’s Fair, and the show is expected to reopen in 2027, as reported by ClickOrlando.
Walt returns to the stage
When the carousel spins again, it will do so with its original creator literally back in the spotlight. Disney previously announced that a new Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney will appear in the attraction’s opening scene, honoring his role in the ride’s original conception. In a Destination D23 recap, Disney Parks Blog said Imagineers worked with the Walt Disney Family Museum and approached the new figure as a tribute that uses modern technology to bring Walt back into the story.
Easter eggs and familiar faces
Behind the scenes, Imagineers are hunting down era-perfect props, including pieces sourced on eBay, to sell each time period. The animatronic family of John, Sarah, and the rest of the crew will return with a refreshed look rather than a total recast. Disney told ClickOrlando that Rover the dog will be back, the Sherman Brothers’ signature anthem will stay in the show, and the updated sets will hide new pop-culture and Disney nods, including an Uncle Orville reference tied to an early Apple investment.
When to plan your visit
Fans hoping for one last spin in the current version are working against the clock. Guests should expect the show to be unavailable after July 6, so anyone booking summer and fall trips will need to plan without this air-conditioned Tomorrowland staple. Refurbishment calendars and trackers have flagged Carousel of Progress as a late-2026 and 2027 project, a timeline that will shape touring strategies for some visitors, according to Disney Tourist Blog.
Why it matters
For many Disney die-hards, this is not just another ride closure. As one of Walt Disney’s oldest creations still in operation, Carousel of Progress carries serious emotional baggage for generations of parkgoers. Imagineers say keeping the heart of the show intact has been a central goal of the update. Disney Parks communications have emphasized the company’s plan to introduce the story to a new generation while preserving the warmth and wry humor that fans remember, per Disney Parks Blog.
