Honolulu police are searching for a masked man who allegedly robbed a Kailua Texaco at cleaver-point late Sunday morning, then made his getaway on a skateboard instead of a car.

Just before 11:30 a.m., the suspect walked into the gas station, pulled out a cleaver-style knife and demanded cash from the register, according to KITV. Police say he fled the store with money in hand, first running off on foot before hopping onto a skateboard and rolling away. The cashier, a 22-year-old woman, was not injured.

Officers responded to the station around 11:30 a.m. and took a description of the suspect, who was reportedly wearing a black ski mask and black hoodie when he approached the counter and brandished the cleaver, Hawaii News Now reported. He allegedly grabbed cash from the register before taking off and is still at large. The case remains under active investigation.

Detectives interviewed the cashier and are reviewing surveillance footage that captured the robbery, according to KITV. No injuries were reported, but investigators say any additional video or witness accounts could help track down the suspect. Tips can be submitted to 911 or to CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300.

District detectives are canvassing nearby businesses in search of more surveillance footage and potential witnesses. Police emphasize that the suspect was armed with a cleaver-type blade during the robbery but that no one was physically hurt, and they are treating the case as an active robbery investigation, according to Hawaii News Now. Anyone who recognizes the clothing description or has information is urged to contact police.

How to Report Tips

Investigators say phone video or other footage of the suspect could be crucial in identifying him. Tips can be shared directly with police by calling 911, or submitted anonymously to CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300, KITV noted.
