Memphis spent Memorial Day weekend grappling with a brutal reality: four people killed in separate incidents across the city in less than 48 hours. Police say the violence was not random, not part of a robbery spree, but a series of personal conflicts and arguments that exploded into deadly encounters.
According to WATN, investigators believe that in most of the cases the victims and suspects knew each other. Detectives do not currently think the killings were tied to robberies or random attacks on strangers, a distinction that offers little comfort to families now planning funerals instead of summer barbecues.
The Memphis Police Department says the deadly weekend began on May 23 on the 3600 block of Claymore Drive, where officers found a 24-year-old woman who was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead. On the morning of May 24, a separate shooting on the 4100 block of Olathe Drive left a 16-year-old boy dead. Police say another 16-year-old has been charged with reckless homicide in that case.
Later that afternoon, officers responded to the 3100 block of Teakrock Lane, where a 38-year-old woman was shot and killed. The violence did not stop there. On the 5400 block of Hudgins Road, a stabbing ended with a 20-year-old man arriving at a local hospital with stab wounds. Police say he was taken into custody and charged after being treated.
Arrests And Charges
In a statement, the Memphis Police Department warned that "a single moment of anger can have permanent consequences, leaving families devastated, children traumatized, and lives forever changed." Investigators say a warrant was issued for 33-year-old Princeton Morris, who was later found in Mississippi and arrested. He is charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and related theft counts.
Police say the teenager suspected in the Olathe Drive killing has been charged with reckless homicide. In the Hudgins Road stabbing, 20-year-old Jamarion Kerr was booked on a first-degree murder charge after he showed up at a hospital with stab wounds of his own.
How To Help
Detectives are still piecing together the full story behind each of the four killings and say community help can make or break these cases. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH or submit a tip online through CrimeStoppers of Memphis. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and officials say even small details can end up being key evidence.
What Comes Next
Prosecutors will now review the evidence in each case and move toward formal charges and arraignments as the investigations push forward. As WATN has reported, police say the weekend violence underscores how quickly disputes between people who know each other can spiral into tragedy. Investigators are again urging anyone with information to step up and help bring answers to the families left behind.
