Detroit is waking up today to a gray, chilly day with temperatures hovering around 43°F and a few hit-or-miss showers hanging on through mid-morning. Expect a mostly cloudy day with a high near 53°F before readings slide back into the low 50s this afternoon under a light north-northwest breeze. Rain amounts look minor, generally under a quarter-inch, where showers do pop up, but an umbrella is still a smart grab for quick runs outside.
This Morning Through Tonight
Scattered rain showers remain possible before 11 a.m., followed by a slight chance of showers and a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon as the atmosphere tries to stir a bit. North-northwest winds around 2 to 8 mph will keep temperatures on the cool side. Tonight stays mostly cloudy with a low near 37°F and only spotty shower chances lingering.
Freeze Watch Late Tonight Into Saturday Morning
The National Weather Service has posted a Freeze Watch from late tonight into tomorrow morning for parts of southeast Michigan. According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, "Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 possible" and residents are urged to "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold." The watch area includes Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Shiawassee, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties.
What To Do
Gardeners should bring potted plants inside or cover them, disconnect hoses, and insulate exposed outdoor faucets to avoid freeze damage. Morning commuters can plan on damp roads today, but not a major ice problem, while still keeping an eye out for slick spots on bridges and overpasses during the early Saturday drive. Temperatures are expected to rebound early next week, with shower and thunderstorm chances on the rise again by next Monday and Tuesday.
This update follows our post last Wednesday, which first flagged frost risk earlier in the week. The new Freeze Watch tightens up the timing so gardeners and homeowners know exactly when to take action. As per Hoodline
