A confrontation on San Antonio's Northeast Side turned ugly Saturday when an off-duty police officer ended up injured after trying to stop an alleged theft along the busy Nacogdoches Road corridor, authorities say.
What Happened
San Antonio police say officers were called to the 16000 block of Nacogdoches Road, near Loop 1604, after an off-duty SAPD officer confronted a man suspected of theft, according to KENS5.
The encounter did not stay verbal for long. The suspect allegedly fought with the off-duty officer, injuring him, then took off from the scene, police told the station. Responding patrol officers searched the surrounding area and quickly found the suspect nearby. He was detained without further incident.
Police identified the suspect only as a 31-year-old man. He now faces a charge of assault on a peace officer and remains in custody while investigators continue to collect statements and evidence, per the report.
Charge And Legal Context
The alleged assault lands the suspect in far more serious territory than a basic scuffle. Under Texas law, when the victim is a peace officer, prosecutors can pursue elevated penalties.
The Texas Penal Code states that assault on a peace officer can be charged as a second-degree felony if a person knowingly or intentionally causes bodily injury to an officer they know is acting as one. A conviction at that level can carry a prison sentence ranging from two to 20 years, plus potential fines.
Police Response
The San Antonio Police Department says officers took the suspect into custody nearby and that the investigation is still active, according to KENS5. Officials have not released the off-duty officer's condition.
Authorities have also not said whether additional charges could be filed as the case develops. Detectives are reviewing how the confrontation unfolded and are going over any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
Neighborhood Notes
The clash adds another entry to a growing police log along this stretch of Nacogdoches Road. Local coverage has noted other recent trouble, including a March incident that left a storefront window shattered in what authorities described as a botched robbery attempt, as previously reported in shop window blasted in botched Nacogdoches stickup.
The corridor runs through a cluster of busy strip centers and commercial spots on the Northeast Side, and police have been called out there repeatedly this year.
