An adult riding an electric bicycle was killed Tuesday evening after a collision with a vehicle at Northeast Halsey Street and Northeast 111th Avenue in northeast Portland. Paramedics rushed the rider to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The driver stayed at the scene, and Portland police say their Major Crash Team is now handling the case.
In a release from the Portland Police Bureau, officers from East Precinct were dispatched at about 6:34 p.m. for reports of a crash involving an electric bicycle and a vehicle at the intersection. The bureau noted that the bicyclist was transported to an area hospital and later died, and that the driver remained on scene while investigators worked. The investigation is logged under case number 26-152558.
City transportation officials say they are still pushing ahead on Vision Zero, even as deadly crashes like this one continue to claim lives on Portland streets. A March report from the Portland Bureau of Transportation found that 39 people died in traffic crashes in 2025, a drop from 2023, and highlighted ongoing work along high-crash corridors. City crews and planners have been pointing to targeted changes to speeds, signals and crosswalks as part of the strategy to reduce fatal and serious-injury collisions.
Investigation and road closures
The Portland Police Bureau says its Major Crash Team is leading the investigation, and that Northeast Halsey Street is closed between Northeast 111th Avenue and Northeast 113th Avenue while crews process the scene. The release also notes that the public information officer was not responding to the crash site, and that more details will be shared when officials determine it is appropriate.
Where Halsey fits in city safety work
NE Halsey is one of several busy arterials where the city has either planned or completed safety upgrades, including the "NE Halsey Safety and Access to Transit" project called out by PBOT. Local coverage has documented city crews widening crosswalks and rebuilding curb ramps near 122nd Avenue in an effort to make outer-east corridors safer for people walking and biking, including work at the terrifying 122nd Avenue crosswalks.
