Ferndale’s Nine Mile corridor is getting a caffeine jolt: Madcap Coffee Company, the Grand Rapids roaster known for its coffee-forward tasting program, is bringing a new café to the ground floor of FerndaleHaus Lofts, with an opening targeted for sometime in 2026. The metro Detroit debut extends Madcap’s tasting and training focus into a new market while the company works to rebuild its retail footprint after pandemic-era wholesale losses. Construction and interior work are already underway inside the space.

A November profile in Crain's Grand Rapids Business reports that the Ferndale shop will fill about 1,800 square feet at 430 W. Nine Mile Rd and is set to feature a ticketed, chef’s-table style coffee tasting bar along with a glass-walled barista training area visible to customers. The outlet notes plans for tiered seating, a garage-style door opening onto an outdoor patio, roughly 35 seats, and an estimated $250,000 build-out. Madcap has described the space as both a training hub and a place for regular cuppings and food pairings as the brand grows in Southeast Michigan.
Why Madcap picked Ferndale
In an April post on Madcap Coffee's blog, founder Trevor Corlett pointed to Ferndale’s blend of residents and steady foot traffic as a reason the company can "lean into elevated coffee experiences" and test different service formats. The company notes that the Ferndale address will be its largest cafe to date and that it partnered with Detroit design firm Black Helmut on the fixtures and layout. Madcap is framing the shop as a destination for classes, tastings, and community programming rather than a pure grab-and-go stop.
Where it fits in Ferndale's coffee scene
Madcap’s arrival comes as Ferndale’s tight-knit coffee scene hits a period of churn. Longtime neighborhood favorite Drifter Coffee recently announced it will close in early May after seven years, a change first reported by CBS Detroit. Local coverage has also highlighted steady population and development growth, drawing new food and drink concepts to Nine Mile, suggesting that Madcap is stepping into a neighborhood where independent cafes still carry an outsized role in everyday life.
