A motorcyclist died after a late-morning collision in North Sacramento earlier this week, turning a busy Northgate Boulevard intersection into yet another deadly scene on a corridor already under scrutiny for safety problems.
What happened
Officers responded just after 10:30 a.m. to a crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle near Northgate Boulevard and Bridgeford Drive, according to KCRA. First responders rushed the rider to a hospital, where he died Monday evening. Authorities have not yet released his name.
Police response
Sacramento police told KCRA that the driver of the other vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Investigators said DUI does not appear to be a factor. The intersection was closed for several hours while the department's major-collision detectives documented the scene and collected evidence.
Why this stretch matters
Northgate Boulevard is already on the city's radar for safety upgrades. In 2023, the City Council signed off on the Northgate Boulevard Transportation Plan, which outlines traffic-calming and safety measures for the corridor, according to the City of Sacramento. The concerns are not theoretical. The Sacramento Bee reported that a January crash at Northgate Boulevard and Del Paso Boulevard killed three people, a tragedy that has amplified neighborhood anxiety about how dangerous this stretch of road can be.
Investigation
Police say the investigation into Monday's collision is ongoing and have released few additional details so far, according to CBS Sacramento. No charges have been announced. Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it to contact investigators as they work to piece together what happened at Northgate and Bridgeford.
