Police have put out new surveillance images of a man they say is wanted in connection with the early-morning sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in Flatlands, hoping someone in the neighborhood recognizes him.
Investigators say the woman was attacked around 5 a.m. on April 16 near East 56th Street and Mill Lane. She was able to get out of the building and later went to a hospital for treatment. As of now, police say no arrests have been made.
The newly released stills show the man inside a store wearing a black hat and later walking across a nearby parking lot, according to detectives. The timeline, images and the NYPD’s public appeal were detailed in local coverage, and investigators say tips from everyday New Yorkers could be the key to putting a name to the face.
How to report what you know
Police are asking anyone with information to contact NYPD detectives or Crime Stoppers. “Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Sex Crimes Hotline or Crime Stoppers,” the station reports.
Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, or through the city’s online tip portal, according to the city’s guidance at the NYPD site.
Support for survivors
Survivors of sexual violence can reach out to local crisis advocates for confidential support and resources. Safe Horizon operates a Rape and Sexual Assault hotline at 212-227-3000 and a 24-hour Hope line at 1-800-621-HOPE, per Safe Horizon. If someone is in immediate danger, authorities urge calling 911.
Why police release images
The NYPD’s Special Victims Unit investigates thousands of sexual violence complaints across the city every year, and detectives say public tips often help them identify suspects faster. The unit notes it handles roughly 14,000 sexual assault complaints annually, according to the NYPD’s information.
Local residents told the outlet’s reporters they are hoping someone will recognize the man in the images and contact investigators so the case can move forward.
