Oldsmar residents are being told to boil their tap water after a major water main break on Monday, May 4, 2026, knocked down pressure across the city and triggered a precautionary advisory.
City officials say the notice covers every property served by Oldsmar while crews work to repair the line and complete safety testing.
According to the City of Oldsmar, a Precautionary Boil Water Notice will stay in effect for at least 48 hours. During that time, all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, mixing baby formula and brushing teeth should be boiled. The city notes that “water for showering and bathing is safe” and is asking residents to conserve water while crews isolate and fix the break.
Tampa Bay 28 reported the advisory and relayed the city’s guidance in coverage by Amanda Boettcher. The outlet noted that officials recommend bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute to disinfect it for drinking and cooking.
What to boil and who should be careful
The city’s instructions urge residents to use bottled water when it is available and to turn off ice makers until the notice is lifted. If boiling tap water, officials advise bringing it to a vigorous rolling boil for at least one minute, letting it cool, then storing it in a clean container.
People with weakened immune systems or open wounds are being told to take extra precautions and consider relying on bottled water while the notice remains in place.
Why conservation matters right now
Oldsmar’s alert comes while the region is already under a Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage Order from the Southwest Florida Water Management District, which tightened watering restrictions beginning April 3.
Officials say that conserving water right now helps crews isolate and repair the break more quickly and also protects local supplies that are already under strain.
When the advisory will be lifted
City leaders say the boil notice will be lifted only after repairs restore normal water pressure and bacteriological testing confirms the water is safe to drink.
