A sunny Sunday along the Youghiogheny River turned into a tense rescue scene off Ramcat Road in Henry Clay Township after a boat reportedly overturned and several people ended up in the water. At least one person was airlifted to a hospital and others were treated on site, and a busy stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage was shut down for a time while crews worked the incident. Authorities said as many as seven people may have been involved, and that emergency teams ultimately got everyone out of the water. Local officials have opened an investigation into what happened.
Dispatchers told CBS Pittsburgh the incident unfolded near Ramcat Road by the Yough and could have involved up to seven people. According to the station, at least one person was flown to a hospital by medical helicopter while several others received treatment at the scene. CBS reported that the Great Allegheny Passage was closed in the area for several hours before reopening and that investigators stayed on scene into Sunday evening to gather details.
Overturned boat and response
A Fayette County 911 supervisor told WPXI that crews were dispatched to the river off Ramcat Road at about 1:11 p.m. after reports of an overturned boat and multiple people in the water, including children. WPXI reported that everyone was out of the water by the time responders cleared the scene. An unknown number of patients were taken to hospitals, with at least one person transported by medical helicopter, according to the station. The Great Allegheny Passage later reopened to both walkers and cyclists once the emergency response wrapped up.
Why the Yough can be dangerous
The Youghiogheny is a magnet for anglers, paddlers and trail users, but it is hardly a lazy river. Fast currents, dam releases and cold water can make certain stretches unpredictable and unforgiving. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission water-trail guide urges paddlers to always wear a life jacket, carry proper safety gear and stay alert to river hazards. Local reporting has repeatedly chronicled rescues and recoveries along the Yough, a body recovered last year near Dawson is one recent reminder of how quickly outings on the river can turn serious.
Investigation and trail impact
Officials told CBS Pittsburgh that an investigation into the Ramcat Road incident is underway, but they have not released the names of those involved or updated conditions for the injured. The Great Allegheny Passage, a heavily traveled rail-trail that closely follows the river through Fayette County, was closed during the rescue operation and has since reopened, authorities said. Anyone planning to hit the river or the trail in the coming days is being urged to pay attention to local updates and use extra caution around river access points.
