Deputies in Paulding County say a months-long investigation into online child exploitation led them to a disturbing discovery inside one local home. Daniel Esquivel has been arrested and charged with 30 counts of sexual exploitation of children after investigators say they uncovered a massive stash of child sexual abuse material.

According to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, a search of Esquivel’s home turned up more than 1,400 videos and photos, along with hundreds of animated images that investigators say depict child sexual abuse or child-like figures. Authorities say Esquivel waived his Miranda rights during an interview at the sheriff’s office and admitted to possessing the material. Detectives are still working to determine whether any of those files were shared with others.

The case started back in January, when the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force flagged 117 files that appeared to contain child sexual abuse material. Deputies spent months combing through those files and ultimately identified 193 individual clips of abusive material, according to The Georgia Sun.

From there, the digital trail began to narrow. Investigators linked the suspicious files to an email address, phone number and IP address that pointed to Esquivel, and a technical services analyst later confirmed that a total of 10 cyber tips were connected to him, Atlanta News First reports. The outlet notes that material from the original tip, combined with what was seized during the search, added up to more than 1,400 photos and videos and over 300 animated images involving child-like figures.

What deputies say happened

On April 1, deputies with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Esquivel’s home and seized multiple electronic devices, according to WSB-TV. During a subsequent interview, investigators say Esquivel agreed to speak without an attorney, waived his Miranda rights and admitted that he possessed the material. He also allegedly told detectives he might have as many as 300 additional videos.

The sheriff’s office publicly thanked the detectives and partner agencies who worked on the case and issued a pointed warning that anyone who exploits children online or offline should expect to be found and prosecuted.

Legal consequences and next steps

Esquivel now faces 30 felony counts under Georgia’s child exploitation statute. State law, outlined in O.C.G.A. § 16-12-100, makes it a crime to possess, distribute or produce sexually explicit material involving minors. Violations can lead to lengthy prison sentences and mandatory sex-offender registration under the Georgia code.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation is still active as detectives sort through the seized devices and try to determine whether any of the material was shared with others. Anyone with information that could assist the case is urged to contact Paulding County investigators, the office said in its statement reported by The Georgia Sun.
