A late-night workplace dispute that started at a Portland jobsite wound up on a Beaverton street, where police say a 37-year-old man followed his coworker and fired a single shot into the driver’s-side door of the coworker’s car. The round, fired on April 10, lodged in the door and missed the person sitting inside. Investigators later searched locations tied to the suspect, recovered evidence, and arrested Portland resident David J. Oliver on Friday.
How Police Say It Unfolded
Officers responded just after 1 a.m. on April 10 to reports of gunfire on Southwest Denny Road, just west of Highway 217, where investigators found a bullet embedded in the vehicle’s driver-side door. Police allege the confrontation began with an argument at a Portland workplace, and that the suspect then followed the victim from that jobsite into Beaverton before firing into the car while the victim sat inside. These details are reported by OregonLive.
Arrest And Charges
After further investigation, detectives obtained warrants and arrested 37-year-old David J. Oliver of Portland. He was booked into the Washington County Jail and faces charges that include second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault and unlawful use of a weapon, according to KPTV. Prosecutors have not released a motive, and the case remains under investigation.
Searches, Tactical Teams And Evidence
Beaverton detectives executed search warrants in Gresham and North Portland with assistance from Portland SERT and East Metro SWAT, locating Oliver without incident on Friday, police say. Investigators recovered the bullet from the car door as part of the case and asked anyone with information to contact detectives. Right Now Oregon published the department’s account.
Recent Local Gun Cases
Beaverton officers have made several firearm-related arrests in recent months, including a separate March arrest linked to a shooting at Schiffler Park that also involved a loaded handgun. The latest arrest fits into a pattern of local detectives serving warrants and teaming up with regional tactical units to track down suspects. KPTV covered the Schiffler Park case.
Legal Status
Oliver’s charges are felonies under Oregon law. An attempt to commit murder is treated as an inchoate offense under the state’s attempt statute and can be prosecuted as a Class A felony, first-degree assault is classified as a Class A felony, and unlawful use of a weapon is described in ORS 166.220 as a Class C felony. Those statutes and classifications are set out in state code and statute resources. See Oregon Revised Statutes, Justia (Assault I) and Justia (Unlawful use of a weapon).
Beaverton police say the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information to contact Detective Paul Fleckenstein at 503-526-2261 or [email protected]. Witnesses who may have video of the April 10 incident are asked to preserve any recordings and share them with investigators. Right Now Oregon and other local outlets report that Oliver is due in court Monday.
