A deadly pre-dawn collision on northbound Interstate 5 near Peltier Road in northern San Joaquin County brought traffic to a standstill today, after a crash involving a big rig left one person dead and a key commute lane shut down for hours.
California Highway Patrol officers were called to the scene shortly after 6 AM and confirmed that one person died at the scene. Authorities did not immediately release the victim’s identity. The wreck blocked the No. 2 lane while officers, investigators and tow crews worked around mangled debris and the disabled truck. According to CBS Sacramento, Caltrans issued a SigAlert and estimated the lane would remain closed through 9 a.m., guaranteeing a rough start to the morning drive.
SigAlert And Traffic Impact
CHP and Caltrans crews squeezed northbound I-5 traffic into fewer lanes while they investigated, creating a rolling bottleneck for commuters trying to get past the Peltier Road area. Drivers on their usual straight shot up the valley instead found themselves crawling, with brake lights stretching across the rural freeway.
Caltrans District 10 had already warned that the corridor would be under pressure this week. The agency’s District 10 advisory outlines alternating lane and ramp closures on I-5 in San Joaquin County through May 9, limiting detour options and leaving drivers with fewer ways around a serious crash like Tuesday’s.
Crash History On This Stretch
The run of I-5 north of Stockton has built a reputation among regulars for its share of trouble, with multiple big-rig and multi-vehicle wrecks in recent years. Crashes near the Peltier Road exit have repeatedly shut down lanes and turned the morning commute into a parking lot. Local coverage and CHP logs have highlighted serious collisions in this corridor, a reminder of how quickly high-speed commercial traffic can turn dangerous along this rural stretch of freeway. KCRA has previously reported crashes near the Peltier and Thornton exits that triggered similar rush-hour chaos.
CHP investigators are still working to determine what led to Tuesday’s fatal collision, and no additional information on the cause of the crash or the victim’s identity had been released as of today. Drivers heading through the area were urged to expect delays and use alternate routes where possible while lanes remain restricted. The CHP and Caltrans are expected to update travel advisories as the scene is fully cleared, according to CBS Sacramento.
