A pre-dawn bomb threat briefly cleared out a terminal at Melbourne Orlando International Airport early Friday, after an anonymous caller claimed explosive devices had been planted inside. Passengers and staff were escorted outside while officers swept the terminal, nearby ramp areas, and aircraft parked at the gates. Airport operations were paused until investigators finished their search.
What officials say
According to WFTV, Melbourne police dispatch received a call from someone who said they had placed devices inside the airport about 40 minutes earlier, without giving a specific location. The Melbourne Airport Authority Police Department shut down the terminal, ordered an evacuation, and directed officers to search the building and the surrounding airfield. The terminal reopened at about 6:30 a.m., and flights and other operations were allowed to resume.
Airport response and oversight
The airport is overseen by the Melbourne Airport Authority, which provides law-enforcement services through its own airport police, according to the Melbourne Orlando International Airport website. Airport staff and police followed established security protocols while investigators conducted a sweep of public areas and ramp spaces.
Legal consequences for false threats
Making a false report about planting a bomb or other explosive is a second‑degree felony in Florida and can include restitution for law-enforcement costs, according to the Florida Senate. Authorities did not immediately say whether the caller had been identified or whether any charges would be filed.
