An early-morning wreck on Camp Bowie Boulevard involving a Fort Worth police SUV and a Chevrolet Malibu left a passenger fighting for their life and shut down a busy intersection for hours, authorities said.
According to FOX 4, the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. in the 6500 block of Camp Bowie Boulevard. Investigators say a black Chevrolet Malibu was attempting a left turn on a flashing yellow arrow toward the 3400 block of Clayton Road when a black Ford Explorer traveling eastbound struck the car on the front-passenger side. Fort Worth Emergency Medical Services performed CPR at the scene and rushed the Malibu’s passenger to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Ford Explorer’s driver has been identified as a Fort Worth police officer, and the department says a major accident investigation is in progress.
Camp Bowie corridor has seen serious crashes
Camp Bowie is one of the city’s busiest west-side arteries, and serious collisions there are unfortunately not rare. In March, a crash on Camp Bowie Boulevard killed a person in a wheelchair, a case detailed by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, adding to longstanding safety concerns along the corridor.
Investigation underway
Members of the Fort Worth Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit documented the scene, and the intersection stayed closed for several hours Sunday morning while officers gathered evidence, per FOX 4. Officials have not said whether the officer was on duty or using emergency lights and sirens at the time of the collision, and the officer’s medical condition has not been released.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be shared as it becomes available. This story will be updated when the Fort Worth Police Department issues a statement or releases additional details.
