A deadly crash early Wednesday morning shut down John Young Parkway at Oak Ridge Road, freezing the pre-dawn commute and drawing a heavy response from state troopers and emergency crews. The busy stretch stayed closed for hours while investigators documented the scene and pushed bleary-eyed drivers onto alternate routes.
Scene and detours
According to WESH, the Florida Highway Patrol said the collision happened around 4:30 a.m. at Oak Ridge Road. The station reported that the road was shut down in the area and urged drivers to detour onto North Orange Blossom Trail, while traffic anchors also pointed commuters toward Sand Lake Road and Americana Boulevard as alternatives. Troopers stayed on scene through the morning as the investigation unfolded.
Another shutdown this week
This latest closure comes on the heels of another deadly crash on the same corridor that shut northbound lanes at Shader Road and jammed up a previous morning rush, WFTV reported. For commuters who rely on John Young Parkway, it has meant repeated detours as crews work separate serious crashes along the route.
Why planners are watching
John Young Parkway ranks among the region’s busiest corridors and has been under the microscope for safety fixes. The City of Orlando’s Vision Zero Progress Report notes 20 deadly and 94 serious-injury crashes in 2024. In parallel, Florida Department of Transportation materials on the corridor, available through an FDOT community presentation, outline planned intersection upgrades and quick-build treatments along key segments. Those projects are aimed at cutting down the high-speed and angle crashes that so often bring traffic here to a standstill.
Investigation ongoing
Officials have not released details about the victims or what led up to Wednesday’s crash, and the cause remains under investigation, WESH reported. Drivers are being warned to expect lingering lane restrictions in the area and to follow local traffic advisories while troopers finish clearing the scene.
