An early-morning fatal collision on Interstate 64 near O'Fallon, Illinois, left a pedestrian dead Friday and tangled the westbound commute for drivers heading toward St. Louis.
Authorities say a semitruck struck the person on I-64, and emergency crews pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Two left lanes of westbound traffic were shut down for hours while first responders and investigators worked the crash site.
What Officials Say
According to First Alert 4, the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. at milepost 14 on I-64 westbound near O'Fallon. The O'Fallon Fire Department told the outlet that responders pronounced the person dead at the scene. Illinois State Police said the pedestrian had been walking in and out of traffic, and ISP is investigating the collision.
Pedestrian Risk On High-Speed Roads
Pedestrians on limited-access highways face especially high risk, since drivers have little time or space to react at interstate speeds. The Governors Highway Safety Association's preliminary 2025 data shows 3,024 people walking were killed in the first half of 2025. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that crashes involving large trucks and higher speeds tend to produce especially severe outcomes for people on foot.
I-64 Has Had Recent Incidents
The stretch of I-64 serving the St. Louis metro has seen its share of recent trouble. A semitruck strike that brought down an overhead sign on April 9 snarled traffic near the I-255 exit, according to RiverBender. In another incident, a fatal multi-vehicle crash in November 2025 killed a driver in a construction zone near O'Fallon, per local reporting. Together, the crashes underscore how quickly a busy interstate can turn deadly and gridlock traffic for hours.
Investigation Underway
Illinois State Police are leading the investigation and had not released the victim's identity as of First Alert 4's latest update. Westbound I-64 traffic remained reduced while crews worked to clear the scene and reopen the blocked lanes.
This remains a developing story. More information will be added as authorities release it.
