
Two people were killed and a third seriously injured early Sunday when a sedan slammed into an SUV at a red light on U.S. 27 in Davenport, authorities said. The crash happened a little after 3:45 a.m. near California Boulevard and narrowed a busy stretch of the highway for hours while investigators worked the scene. A southbound Genesis G70 hit a Ford Explorer that was stopped at a red light, officials said. The Genesis driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a passenger later died at a local hospital. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit is leading the investigation.
Crash Details
According to Tampa Bay 28, the Genesis was driven by a 21-year-old man from Summerfield who was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The outlet reports that his passenger, a 30-year-old Davenport woman, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died. The Ford Explorer’s driver, a 31-year-old Davenport man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Investigation Underway
Local coverage citing the sheriff’s office says investigators believe the Genesis was approaching a solid red light near California Boulevard when it crashed into the stopped Explorer. DailyRidge reports that the investigation is ongoing and that no charges are anticipated at this stage. Deputies have not released the victims’ names, pending family notification and standard testing.
US 27 Corridor Safety
U.S. 27 is a heavily traveled corridor through Polk County and has seen other serious collisions in recent years. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office previously investigated a fatal crash on the same highway in November 2024 that led to a vehicular homicide arrest.
