An 18-year-old Randolph man is being held without bail after police say a confrontation outside the South Shore Technical High School prom at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston turned into a gun scare. Authorities identified the suspect as Adrian Arroyo and say a parking lot argument escalated into threats, including an alleged threat to run over a student, before he reportedly raised what looked like a firearm into the sky and drove off. No one was hurt, and officers later arrested him at his Randolph home, according to police.
What police say
An on-site police detail officer called for backup around 7:15 p.m. after reports of a disturbance in the club parking lot, according to NBC10 Boston. Kingston police told the outlet that Arroyo brandished a black semi-automatic style pistol, pointed it skyward and appeared to chamber a round during the encounter.
Arrest and court dates
Arroyo was later found at his Randolph residence and surrendered peacefully to officers, according to Boston 25 News. The outlet reports he is being held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on June 2.
Evidence seized
Detectives reviewed surveillance video and executed a search warrant at the property. Investigators say they recovered a black Crossman BB-gun replica from a vehicle glovebox that matched what victims described, NBC10 Boston reports. Police told the outlet that no actual firearms were recovered and that the matter has been sent to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office for charging decisions.
Legal next steps
Under Massachusetts law (G.L. c. 276, § 58A), prosecutors can seek a dangerousness hearing to ask that a defendant be held without bail before trial. The statute and related court guidance outline how those hearings work; see Mass.gov for details on the procedure and standards. Boston 25 News also reports that the case has been referred to the Plymouth County District Attorney and that Arroyo is scheduled to appear in court on June 2.
Kingston police said there was an increased officer presence at the prom following the incident and urged anyone with video or other information to contact investigators as the inquiry continues. Officials emphasized there was no known public safety risk at this time.
