A usually quiet southwest Oklahoma City neighborhood turned into a tense scene Tuesday afternoon after reports of gunfire and a person barricading inside a home near Southwest 60th Street and South Douglas Avenue. Police locked down the area as tactical officers and multiple units moved in, while neighbors clustered at a safe distance, watching and waiting. Authorities had not said whether anyone was hurt.
According to News 9, Oklahoma City Police said someone inside the home fired a shot at the front door, then refused to come out, triggering a standoff. Officers quickly set up a perimeter, and tactical teams began working to make contact with the person inside and try to bring the situation to a peaceful close.
SW OKC Has Seen Several Standoffs This Year
Recent months have already brought several high-profile standoffs to southwest Oklahoma City, often involving evacuations and specialized gear. In one April case near Southwest 96th Street, tactical units ultimately used a robot to help persuade a suspect to surrender, as shown in drone footage published by KOCO. Incidents like that help explain why officers now take their time with large perimeters and slow, methodical negotiation work when an active scene unfolds.
What Neighbors Should Know
Police told people in the immediate area to stay away from the scene and follow officers’ instructions. As reported by News 9, news crews were headed to the neighborhood to gather more details, and drivers were warned to expect delays on nearby streets while officers secured the perimeter.
This is a developing situation, and reporters on scene were still working to confirm details. Officials had not released the name of the person inside the home or any potential charges at the time of the initial report.
