Police say a Memphis man is now in custody after a deadly shooting in South Memphis on April 13. Timothy E. Geter was arrested in connection with the killing of Ulric F. Brooks Jr. in the 2100 block of Lowell Avenue. Geter appeared in court on Friday morning, May 1, and is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
According to WREG, Memphis Police took Geter into custody on April 30 after officers found Brooks with a single gunshot wound to the head. A relative later turned over cellphone video that shows a fight inside the home, and investigators say Ring doorbell audio captured the sound of a gunshot roughly two minutes after a gold Chevy Malibu turned onto Lowell Avenue. The station reports that neighbors also described seeing a tan or gold four-door sedan at the residence just before shots rang out and that the Malibu was registered to a family member of the suspect.
Police Response and Neighborhood
Officers were dispatched to Lowell Avenue near East Person Avenue at about 4:43 p.m. on April 13, where they secured the scene and called in homicide detectives, who canvassed the area and asked residents for tips, according to Action News 5. Earlier reporting by Hoodline placed the killing in the Castalia Heights neighborhood and noted that residents there have repeatedly raised concerns about ongoing violence on their blocks.
Video, Vehicle Timeline and Witnesses
Investigators say the combination of cellphone footage and doorbell recordings helped them piece together a timeline that points straight to the suspect. The cellphone video showed a person identified as "Tim" being struck inside the home shortly before the fatal shot, while surveillance footage shows a gold Chevy Malibu turning east onto Lowell from South Cooper at about 4:32 p.m., matching the time the doorbell audio recorded the gunshot, per WREG. Detectives say the Malibu’s occupant was tied to the case and noted that Geter had been listed as the occupant of that same vehicle in two separate accidents last year as they built out their investigative file.
Legal Implications
Geter now faces a first-degree murder charge along with a weapons enhancement, a combination that carries some of the toughest penalties on the books in Tennessee. Under state law, first-degree murder can bring a sentence of life imprisonment or, in certain cases, the death penalty. The statute covers both premeditated killings and slayings that occur during specific felonies, and it lays out separate procedures for how sentencing is handled, according to Tennessee Code §39-13-202.
