One person is dead and a dog is still missing after what started as a day at the water turned into a deadly rescue at the Rock Creek bridge in El Dorado County yesterday. Crews focused on the main pool below the bridge, a spot officials say is notorious for powerful hydraulics that can grab swimmers and refuse to let them go. Investigators are asking anyone who saw what happened to contact local deputies as they work to piece together the final moments before the fatal incident.
As reported by CBS Sacramento, the Mosquito Fire Protection District was among the first units on scene. They were joined by the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, Cal Fire and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. The outlet noted that the rescue effort unfolded Saturday morning at the popular swimming pools around Rock Creek bridge, where one person died while crews searched the water and surrounding area for a missing dog. Officials have not released the victim's name, saying next-of-kin notifications and a coroner's review must happen first.
Low-Head Dam Creates ‘Washing Machine’ Hazard
Officials told CBS Sacramento that the main pool at the site contains a low-head dam hydraulic, a water feature that can look calm from above but behaves like a churning “washing machine” below the surface and is notoriously hard to escape.
According to the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, low-head dams can generate powerful recirculating currents that pull swimmers, boaters and debris back toward the drop, trapping them in place. These hydraulic rollers have been linked to drownings in other locations, and safety experts repeatedly warn that they are far more dangerous than they appear from shore. In the wake of Saturday's incident, rescuers urged visitors to keep a wide berth from spillways and bridge edges while crews and investigators continue their work.
Agencies on Scene
Crews from the Mosquito Fire Protection District were among the responders at Rock Creek bridge, bringing rope and water-rescue equipment to the scene. The district's public site lists its station at 8801 Rock Creek Road and notes that much of the surrounding area relies on volunteer staffing, which can mean neighbors are often the first to spot trouble and call for help. Officials said the search for the missing dog is ongoing and that the coroner is expected to release more information about the victim in the coming days.
Anyone with tips, photos or video from the incident is asked to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Public Information Office through the agency’s website at the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office or via email at [email protected]. The coroner will publicly identify the victim once family notifications are complete. Until then, officials are repeating a message that is as blunt as it is necessary: treat bridge pools and spillways as hazardous, and keep pets leashed and away from moving water, no matter how inviting it looks on a hot day.
