The Thursday morning commute in Rock Hill turned tragic when a 50-year-old woman was killed after her Toyota RAV4 left Red River Road, hit a fence and overturned near Waterford Park Drive. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene, and the roadway was shut down while investigators documented the crash. Authorities have not yet released the victim's name.
According to WCCB Charlotte, the wreck was reported around 7:15 a.m. and involved only the RAV4, which went off the left side of the road before striking the fence and flipping. Rock Hill's Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is handling the investigation and has asked anyone who saw what happened to contact police.
Why rollovers so often turn deadly
Rollover crashes are relatively rare compared with other types of wrecks, but they come with an outsized risk of severe injury and death. Occupants can be thrown from the vehicle, or the roof can collapse and cause catastrophic trauma. Research summarized on PubMed Central finds that rollovers account for a disproportionately large share of traffic fatalities and usually require detailed reconstruction work to sort out factors such as speed and whether seat belts were in use.
Serious wrecks keep Rock Hill traffic under the microscope
Earlier this year, a high-speed multi-vehicle crash on Celanese Road left one person dead and led to criminal charges, highlighting a run of serious collisions in the city, according to high-speed multi-vehicle crash on Celanese Road. Those incidents have kept traffic safety and enforcement in the spotlight as officials and residents push for answers.
Rock Hill police continue to investigate Thursday's rollover and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the department, WCCB Charlotte reports.
