The quiet lawn on the east side of the University of Tennessee's Student Union is being traded in for something a lot louder. A new multi-level plaza is rising where the grass used to be, with a covered stage, tiered seating and dedicated space for food trucks. Construction crews have been busy across the site this spring, and the university says the space should be ready for student events by late summer, part of a broader building wave reshaping the heart of Rocky Top.
What's planned for the east plaza
According to UT Facilities Services, the Student Union East Plaza Upgrades will bring a covered performance stage, a synthetic‑turf event lawn with tiered seating, hookups and parking for food trucks and the university's first outdoor fire table. The project is listed as under construction with monthly progress updates and is scheduled to wrap up in Summer 2026.
Renderings, shade canopies and a V‑O‑L‑S landmark
Project renderings show stacked patios, grassy gathering spots, colorful kite‑shaped shade canopies and clusters of orange chairs around a built‑in firepit. As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, Student Life also plans to install large V‑O‑L‑S letters as a new north‑plaza landmark. University planning documents put the overall plaza budget near $3.5 million, with the letters themselves estimated at about $1 million.
Why the university says it matters
Ted Murphy, UT's lead landscape architect, told UT Facilities Services that the goal is to "get more student activities happening at the Student Union, not just inside, but on the exterior as well." The design also adds a new crosswalk across Philip Fulmer Way, intended to improve pedestrian safety and tighten the connection between the plaza and nearby academic buildings.
Timeline and campus context
University project listings place the Student Union plaza alongside big-ticket efforts such as the Wharton Chemistry Building, a new business school and the Torchbearer residence hall on a multi‑million‑dollar construction calendar. A public pre‑bid posting at ConstructConnect and the university's construction pages indicate that the food‑truck portion of the project was prioritized and that the remainder of the plaza is expected to be finished in August, in line with the university's Summer 2026 timeframe.
For students, the new east plaza is set to deliver more outdoor study spots and hangout space, room for small performances and mobile dining just steps from the Student Union. If the V‑O‑L‑S letters rise as planned, the new north‑plaza landmark is likely to double as a game‑day selfie magnet and a highly visible symbol of the campus' continuing upgrades.
