Drivers on Route 128 who navigate by neon instead of GPS can relax. Onyx Partners has bought the former You-Do-It Electronics building at 40 Franklin Street in Needham and plans to turn it into the firm’s new headquarters while keeping the rooftop sign that glows over the highway. The deal shifts a long-running family retail site into office use and keeps a mid-century landmark in place as the building gets a round of interior and exterior upgrades.

According to the Boston Business Journal, Onyx Partners paid $5.7 million for the property. The sale follows the closure of the family-owned You-Do-It store in 2024 after more than seven decades in business, a move that left the future of the landmark sign up in the air, as reported by Boston.com.

Onyx Will Keep the Sign

Onyx has pledged to keep the rooftop “You-Do-It” billboard “as a permanent local landmark” while modernizing the rest of the property, according to Needham Local. In a press release quoted by Needham Local, founding partner Anton Melchionda said the firm is “honored to carry on the tradition” of the site as it is adapted for office use.

What Will Change

Not every piece of You-Do-It-era branding will stay put. The side-mounted You-Do-It sign - the one with the atomic logo visible from nearby streets - is slated to come down even as the rooftop billboard remains. Onyx says it is “working to determine the best way to preserve it,” per Needham Local. Design renderings show an Onyx Partners sign taking over that side position while the company explores options to safeguard the older piece for local collectors or a museum.

Why the Sign Matters

The “You-Do-It” neon has been a familiar Route 128 landmark since the 1960s, a relic from the corridor’s heyday as “America’s Technology Highway.” The Boston Globe highlighted Onyx’s purchase as tied to one of the last visible bits of mid-century Americana along 128, and longtime customers and former employees have treated the sign as a small but potent piece of regional tech history.

What’s Next

Onyx plans to modernize both the interior and exterior of the building and intends to occupy the roughly 30,000-square-foot property as its long-term headquarters, according to the Charles River Regional Chamber. The firm, which is currently based on Reservoir Street in Needham, says the project reinforces its commitment to the town and should keep the You-Do-It rooftop sign lit up for commuters along Route 128 as renovations move forward.
