A quiet Thursday afternoon in Austinburg Township turned deadly when a collision at the rural intersection of State Route 307 and Windsor-Mechanicsville Road left one person dead and two others injured, according to officials. Emergency crews shut down the crossroads for hours while investigators documented the scene and medics rushed victims to nearby hospitals.
Investigators say the crash happened around 5:16 p.m. when a northbound Ford Transit failed to stop and drove through the sign at the SR 307 junction, slamming into a Toyota Tacoma. The force of the impact pushed the Tacoma off the roadway and caused it to overturn, and the Transit then crashed into two parked vehicles. The Transit drive
0.r, 77-year-old Paul King of Newton Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Transit, 77-year-old Marsha King, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by medical helicopter for treatment, while the Tacoma’s driver, a 63-year-old Jefferson man, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, as reported by WKYC.
Crash history on this rural stretch
The Windsor-Mechanicsville corridor and nearby state routes have seen their share of serious wrecks in recent years, keeping safety concerns front and center on Ashtabula County’s narrow rural two-lane roads. A previous fatal motorcycle crash on Windsor-Mechanicsville Road, reported by News 5 Cleveland, underscored how quickly a routine drive in this area can turn tragic.
Investigation and response
The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, the Northwest Ambulance District, Geneva City EMS, and Austinburg Fire all responded to the scene, and the crash remains under investigation, officials told WKYC. Troopers and crash investigators are expected to take a hard look at the intersection layout, the vehicles involved, and witness accounts as they build out their findings.
