Thursday, May 21, 2026, started off cool and calm in Sacramento, with clear skies and temperatures in the upper 50s at Sacramento Executive (KSAC). By afternoon, though, the city is expected to bake, with highs near 96°F and only a slip back into the upper 50s overnight, offering limited relief after sunset.
Afternoon Heat and Timing
Most inland neighborhoods are on track to hit the mid 90s by mid to late afternoon, with the hottest stretch running roughly from 2 to 5 p.m. West-southwest winds will stay on the light side during those peak hours, so do not count on much of a breeze to take the edge off. According to the National Weather Service Sacramento, temperatures will run well above normal, and a Moderate HeatRisk is in place for today and Friday.
Where To Cool Off
If you do not have reliable air conditioning, you can dial 2-1-1 or check Sacramento County for its cooling centers page, where activated sites and hours are listed. Typical respite locations include the Outreach and Engagement Center and the Sam & Bonnie Pannell Community Center. Try to move heavy outdoor chores to early morning or evening, drink plenty of water, and keep an eye on older neighbors, infants, and pets during the hottest part of the day. Regional Transit may offer free rides to cooling locations, but be sure to confirm schedules before you head out.
Looking Ahead
Highs stay well above normal through Friday, hovering around 93°F, before easing back into the 80s over the weekend. Memorial Day Monday should land near 82°F with an uptick in onshore flow. West-southwest winds are expected to strengthen by Monday, with gusts possibly reaching 20 to 30 mph in the Valley and Delta, so plan outdoor work for the cooler parts of the day.
