A West Side man is behind bars after what deputies say started as a catcall to a young girl and quickly turned into a machete threat and a tense, hours-long standoff. The confrontation unfolded Friday afternoon in the 11900 block of White Birch Street in the Coolcrest neighborhood and wrapped only after SWAT and tactical units moved in. Authorities say the suspect ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody on an aggravated-assault-with-a-deadly-weapon charge, and a woman who was in the house may face a hindering-apprehension case of her own.
Standoff On The West Side
Speaking to KSAT, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said deputies were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. after the man allegedly catcalled a young girl on White Birch, then pulled a machete and threatened several people. Deputies say the suspect barricaded himself inside a home in the Coolcrest neighborhood and refused repeated orders to come out. Investigators deployed tear gas, and a SWAT team moved to force its way in before the man surrendered and was arrested sometime after 7 p.m. Salazar told KSAT the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Roland Hernandez, was booked on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, and that a woman inside the home will likely face hindering-apprehension allegations.
Legal Ramifications
Under the Texas Penal Code §22.02, an assault is bumped up to aggravated assault when a deadly weapon is used or shown during the offense, making it a felony. The exact punishment depends on the details of the case but can involve years in prison and significant fines. As always, defendants remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The Bexar County District Attorney will review the sheriff’s report and decide whether to file formal charges or pursue any enhancements.
Background On The Suspect
Salazar told KSAT this latest arrest was roughly the 25th time Hernandez has been taken into custody, though officials did not immediately provide information on any prior convictions. Court and booking records will show whether those earlier arrests resulted in guilty findings. Beyond the sheriff’s remarks, authorities kept quiet as the investigation continues.
What Comes Next
Hernandez was booked on the aggravated-assault charge and is being held while the case moves forward, according to sheriff’s office statements. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 210-335-6000, per Bexar County, or check the county’s jail activity reports for updates on his status. From here, the case heads into the Bexar County criminal justice system as prosecutors examine the investigation and decide how to proceed.
